What is SIM unlocked?
In the United States, AT&T (Cingular) and T-Mobile use GSM
networks to operate. So the equipment they provide
to customers are GSM phones, PDA's and other mobile devices which
operate on their GSM networks. GSM phones are designed to be used
with SIM cards (small plastic smart cards which fit into the back
of your phone). These SIM cards typically carry customer account
information such as the carrier, mobile numbers, and other details
which allows the phone to recognize the network and user in order
to provide service. Without an active SIM card, a GSM phone will
not work.
Most U.S. GSM carriers such as AT&T (Cingular) and T-Mobile
get their phones from manufacturers such as Motorola, Samsung, Nokia,
etc. When the phones arrive in the U.S., they are repackaged, software
flashed, and SIM locked by intermediate companies before they are
available to customers. SIM locked means that there is a software
or hardware lock which allows the phone to only be used with a particular
carrier which it is locked for. So for example, this which you cannot
buy a Cingular phone and use it for T-Mobile.
The phones we sell here at Daddiyo are all SIM unlocked. So you
can use them with ANY GSM carrier around the world. In addition,
we sell only tri-band or quad-band GSM phones so they are typically
compatible internationally. The U.S. will use 850/1900 mHz GSM networks
and Asia/Europe will use 900/1800 mHz GSM networks. Tri-band and
quad-band phones have a combination of 3-4 bands which makes them
compatible with international GSM networks when travelling.
Note: U.S. carriers like Verizon Wireless and Sprint work on CDMA
networks and Nextel works on iDEN networks. Therefore, GSM phones
will not work on these networks.
